Lost places close to Andraxt (Mallorca). Monasterio de la Trapa
The Trappist monastery in Andraxt.
Today we talk about an extraordinary beautiful excursion to the Trappist monastery close to Andraxt.
The origins of the monastery lies in the French Revolution, when 40 monks of the religious order of the Trappist have been first send to exile from the Normandy to Aragon and later to Mallorca by Napoleons troops.
In their new homeland on the beautiful Balearic Island, in the valley of San Josep, they constructed in less than 10 years a simple but beautiful monastery. Not only have the monks been demons for work but also strict vegetarians and were not allowed to interact neither with the outside world nor between them. One single monk was assigned to beg for food and charities in the nearby village. This monk was not permitted to speak to the other monks and lived in absolute isolation.
From the monastery one has an astonishing view on the island Sa Dragonera.
Nowadays the remains of the monastery are taken care of by the Balearic government. Moreover acquired an ecological Balearic group, with the help of private donations, the 75 hectare big estate in order to protect it from decay.
